Frequently asked questions
What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a doctor who has completed general dental medicine and then specialized in a four-year postgraduate program in orthodontics—a branch of dentistry that focuses on correcting misaligned teeth and bite issues.
Are all braces the same?
With the Damon system, we don’t just align teeth—we create beautiful smiles. Our treatment solutions are based on your unique smile, profile, and other factors that will influence how you look in your 40s, 50s, and beyond. The Damon system is designed to deliver lifelong results.
How much time does the treatment take?
Treatment with the Damon system is usually faster than conventional braces. An additional advantage is that it requires significantly fewer visits to the orthodontist during the treatment process.
When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child’s first orthodontic check-up should take place before the age of 7.
Some children may need to be monitored even earlier, and your dentist or family doctor will usually provide guidance if necessary.
An early orthodontic evaluation does not always mean early treatment. The purpose is to track your child's dental development as they grow and provide guidance on the optimal time to begin orthodontic treatment.
Is It Necessary to Remove Crooked Permanent Teeth?
Is tooth extraction necessary in cases of severe crowding? Thanks to modern orthodontic technologies, it is possible to align crooked permanent teeth without extractions.
With advanced orthodontic systems like Damon, we can straighten teeth even in cases of severe crowding without the need to remove permanent teeth.
The gentle forces of the Damon system’s archwires provide more treatment options. In our clinic, tooth extraction is considered based on facial features, while also taking into account the long-term effects on your appearance as you age.
Will I Need a Palatal Expander?
With the Damon system, there is no need for rapid palatal expanders. We can widen the dental arch using braces and gentle archwire forces throughout your orthodontic treatment. For early treatment of young patients with crossbites, we may use light expanders when necessary.
Does It Hurt to Get Braces?
No, braces are applied directly to your teeth without drilling or any invasive procedures! Most patients experience mild discomfort only during the first 3-5 days after getting braces. You can reduce any discomfort by taking Ibuprofen or Paracetamol if needed.
Do You Tighten Braces, and Will It Hurt?
No, at OrthoSmile Orthodontic Clinic, we do not tighten braces with the Damon system—only the archwires are changed. Most patients experience mild discomfort for the first 1-2 days after an adjustment.
